Although the story of Dr. Martens began when German army doctor Klaus Mäertens broke his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps in 1945 and subsequently invented a practical boot to nurture his injured foot, Dr. Martens has been a British footwear institution since the 60s when the doctor joined forces with Griggs family shoe maker in the British shoemaking capital, Northampton. Since then Dr. Martens have been viewed as practical, rebellious, functional, fashionable and a whole range of other adjectives to boot. Today, Dr. Martens continue to produce their iconic range of footwear, which are adopted by each new generation that discovers them.
